Prescription Medication/Drugs

PEI Pharmacare: Covers the cost of prescription medications that are listed on the formulary. Assistance is available for people who qualify for one of the department’s drug programs. Sponsored refugees may be eligible for various drug programs including:

  • AIDS/HIV Program – Eligible medications are fully covered under this program.
  • Cystic Fibrosis Program – Full coverage of the cost of approved prescription and non-prescription medications.
  • Diabetes Drug Program – Subsidization of the cost of approved diabetes medications (insulin products, oral diabetes medications, urine testing material and blood test strips) by the program. (Patient must also be registered with the Provincial Diabetes Program)
  • Family Health Benefit Drug Program – The program covers approved prescription medications for children under 19 and dependent students who are still registered as a full-time student and under the age of 25. Coverage is dependent on income level and number of dependents. Eligibility requirements: Low-income families with at least one child who is under 19 years of age, or; Low-income families with at least one full-time student under 25 years of age, and; Persons must be eligible for PEI Medicare.
  • Hepatitis Drug Program – Provides Peginterferon injections/Ribavirin and Immunoglobulin to persons diagnosed with Hepatitis. Provides Hepatitis A vaccine, Hepatitis B vaccine and Hepatitis A & B vaccine to persons who have been in close contact with a person diagnosed with Hepatitis or are at risk of infection. Provides Hepatitis A vaccine, Hepatitis B vaccine and Hepatitis A & B vaccine to persons with an occupational risk of infection.
  • Meningitis Drug Program – The Provincial Pharmacy provides Rifampin and Ciprofloxacin at the request of the Chief Health Office.
  • Seniors’ Drug Program – provides subsidization to seniors (age 65 and older) for drug costs, particularly those costs associated with long-term drug use for chronic conditions.
  • Transplant Anti-Rejection Drug Program – will pay for approved immunosuppresant medications for eligible persons.
  • Tuberculosis Drug Program – Program will pay for approved drugs for the treatment and prevention of tuberculosis for eligible person.

Dental

Children’s Dental Care Program – full coverage for basic dental services for all children 3-17.

Cleft Palate Orthodontic Treatment Funding Program – children born with a hard tissue cleft palate are eligible for partial funding for orthodontic treatments.

Children’s Dental Health – Preventive Orthodontic Program – Interceptive, preventive, and simple corrective orthodontic services are provided by Dental Public Health staff dentists, using simple, removable orthodontic appliances. Parents are responsible for the laboratory cost of the orthodontic appliances. Children are referred to the orthodontic clinic by private dentists or Dental Public Health clinics. Children with orthodontic problems that are too complex for simple appliances are referred to private orthodontists, at their parent’s expense.
