Prescription Medication/Drugs

As Permanent Residents with an OHIP card, privately sponsored refugees may be eligible for:

  1. the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) Program when registered with the Trillium Drug Program. Under the Trillium Drug Program, the person must pay a deductible of 4% of the household total net income and at times a co-payment of $2 to the pharmacy.
  2. full coverage of intravenous cancer drugs through the New Drug Funding Program.
  3. full coverage of drugs used to treat cystic fibrosis, thalassaemia, Zidovudine and pentamidine for HIV infection, Erythropoietin for anemia due to end stage kidney disease, Cyclosporine after solid organ or bone marrow transplant, children with growth failure, Clozapine for schizophrenia, and Gaucher’s disease under the Special Drugs Program.
  4. full coverage of certain drugs, supplements and speciality foods used to treat inherited metabolic disorders under the Understanding the Inherited Metabolic Diseases Program.
  5. full coverage of the drug palivizumab used to prevent a serious lower respiratory tract infection in certain high risk infants (infection is caused by the Respiratory Syncytial Virus) under the Respiratory Syncytial Virus Prophylaxis for High-Risk Infants Program.
  6. full coverage of the drug verteporfin, used to slow the advance of age-related macular degeneration (an eye condition) under the Visudyne (Verteporfin) Program.
  7. OHIP+ Starting January 1, 2018, more than 4,400 drug products are free for anyone age 24 years or younger. You don’t need to enroll – all you need is a health card number and an eligible prescription.

Dental

Community Dental Hygiene Clinics – For urgent concerns, call 613-549-1232, ext. 1218 to speak to a dental professional for assistance. (KFL&A Public Health).

Healthy Smiles Ontario provides free, on-going dental care to children from families with an Adjusted Family Net Income of $20,000 per year or less, up to the age of 17. This program is delivered through local public health units. Contact your local public health unit for more information.

Free or Low-Cost Dental Programs for Hamilton Residents: While this program is limited and is restricted, low-income families and seniors who are not on social assistance may be eligible for it. To find out if you are eligible contact the Special Supports unit at the City of Hamilton. For a list of covered dental care procedures, please visit the City of Hamilton’s website.

The Dental Health Bus of the City of Hamilton is a mobile outreach clinic that provides free dental care (X-Rays, fillings, extractions, antibiotics) to residents of Hamilton who have no dental coverage.

Ottawa Public Health offers free dental screenings, fluoride varnish applications and dental health information in the community, and every year, dental hygienists from Ottawa Public Health offer free dental screenings in schools. This program identifies children with urgent dental needs and works with families to help them see a dentist.

Region of Waterloo, Public Health: In addition to the CINOT program, the Region’s Public Health provides basic dental care and preventive services for children and youth in need of care, who do not qualify for any other dental treatment programs.

 

Teaching Institutions:

University of Western Ontario: provides dental care.

Algonquin College: the dental clinic provides dental care at a reduced cost

Georgian College: preventative oral health care is provided at a reduced cost

University of Toronto: student dentists provide dental care services at Patient Clinics at reduced fees.

The Canadore College Dental Hygiene Clinic provides free cleanings for those over age 3.

The Durham College Dental Clinic provides dental examinations and cleanings from September to April for a fee of $30 for adults and $10 for children (must be 5 years of age or older).

Niagara College’s Dental Clinic offers examinations, cleanings, scaling and polishing for adults from $25 -$35, and examinations, polishing, individual oral hygiene instruction, and radiographs and fluoride treatments (when necessary) for children for $10.

Ontario Health and Long-Term Care

Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture: Located in Toronto, this centre provides mental health counselling through individual sessions, support groups, coordinated professional services and crisis intervention.

Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services: The Primary Health Care Team provides a range of primary care services as well as therapeutic counselling and mental health services.

Across Boundaries: This mental health centre provides support and services to people of colour in the GTA who are experiencing severe mental health problems/serious mental illness. Services include case management, alternative healing, support groups, skill building, psychiatric consultation program, family support and more.

Counselling Connect provides free access to a same-day or next-day phone or video counselling session. This service is for children, youth, adults and families in Ottawa and the surrounding area.

Davenport-Perth Neighbourhood & Community Health Centre: Located in Toronto, the Centre offers primary health care as well as mental health and addiction counselling programs regardless of health card status.

Kitchener-Waterloo: Sanctuary Refugee Health Centre: In addition to culturally sensitive primary health care, patients have access to a wide variety of services on site, including psychological and mental health assessment; trauma counselling; dietary advice; assistance with settlement issues; help in completing applications for income security and disability benefits; health education; and special programs designed to meet needs around childbirth, parenting, and respect for diversity.
