RSTP’s settlement support connection project matches sponsored refugees with trained settlement workers (also known as settlement counsellors) in their community, at no cost. We match refugees sponsored by all types of sponsoring groups with settlement workers that we have trained to understand the dynamics of refugee sponsorship and to complement the settlement support offered by sponsors.

The project has two main goals:

1. To improve sponsored refugees’ access to settlement services.

2. To support sponsoring groups in providing settlement support.

What services do settlement workers provide?

Settlement workers complement and enhance the settlement support given by private sponsoring groups. By working together, sponsoring groups and settlement workers can improve the  settlement and integration journeys of sponsored refugees.

Settlement workers assess the settlement needs of privately sponsored refugees and provide them with tailored services, at no cost. These services include:

• assistance with applications for important documents (e.g., Canada Child Benefit, SIN card)
• orientation
• language training
• counselling
• employment services
• services for particular groups or communities (e.g., newcomer youth, seniors, women, LGBTQIA)
• settlement support group
• referral to specialized services, based on identified needs

Sponsored refugees may also develop a social network and create ties in their community beyond their sponsoring group when they receive services from a settlement agency.
