As members of our society, newcomers share in the collective responsibility of participating in truth and reconciliation the same way that all non-Indigenous residents and citizens living on Indigenous lands do. Private sponsors can play a crucial role in shaping the newcomers’ understanding of the impacts of colonialism and the residential school system on Indigenous Peoples – both past and present. Sponsors can demonstrate what it means to participate meaningfully in Truth and Reconciliation as an everyday practice. National days of recognition like the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Orange Shirt Day) on September 30th and reconciliation week, can provide an easy entry-point for starting the conversation. They can also provide an opportunity for newcomers to participate in events across the country where they can listen to Indigenous voices and Elders, be in community and build respectful, action-oriented relationships with Indigenous Peoples and their communities.

We’ve listed a variety of learning and teaching resources for both sponsored refugees and their sponsors below, as well as a list of events being held around Truth and Reconciliation day in 2026.

(Note: ‘Indigenous Peoples’ in Canada refer to the collective of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples who are the original inhabitants of North America)

What the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation is – A plain language explanation.

September 30th is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

In Canada, September 30 is a special day to remember Indigenous children who were forcibly taken away from their families and sent to ‘residential schools’.

Residential schools were places where Indigenous children (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) were forced to live.
