In May 2008, the RSTP website was started to support the sponsoring community in Canada with information and updates on private sponsorship of refugees (PSR) and changes in government policy and practices regarding PSR. RSTP also provides space for the sponsoring community to share their experiences, challenges and best practices. The sponsoring community in Canada has grown in number and strength since the government first opened up opportunity to groups in Canada to extend a helping hand to qualified individuals abroad in need of refugee protection. Sponsorship of refugee is both fulfilling and challenging. Since 1979, organizations that have signed an agreement with Citizenship and Immigration Canada have made it possible for hundreds of thousands of people to live safely in Canada. On the other hand, changes in country conditions, changing government policies, new rules and new people impact on the sponsorship process and require that sponsors catch up through regular information updates and training. The RSTP website provides potential, new and existing sponsors with information and updates on sponsorship in an accessible and interactive way. People interested in becoming sponsors and new sponsors will find information on how to form a SAH or a Constituent group, the sponsorship process and training opportunities to learn more about refugees. Sponsorship Agreement Holders will also access information updates from RSTP, CIC and elected SAH representatives at the NGO-Government committee. Links to Citizenship and Immigration Canada website regarding how to immigrate to Canada are also provided. |
